This paper supplements the author's earlier paper [Jap. J. Math., New Ser. 15, 65-97 (1989; Zbl 0703.35137)]. Let \(\Omega\) be a bounded domain in \(\mathbb{R}^ n\), and \[ B[u,v]=\int_ \Omega\sum_{|\alpha|,|\beta|\leq m}a_{\alpha\beta}(x)D^ \alpha u(x)D^ \beta v(x) dx, \] with \(B[u,u]\geq\delta\| u\|^ 2_ m-C_ 0\| u\|^ 2_ 0\). Let \(A\) be the operator whose domain is \(u\in H^ m_ 0(\Omega)\) such that there exists \(f\in L_ 2(\Omega)\) with \(B[u,v]=(f,v)\) for all \(v\in H^ m_ 0(\Omega)\), and define \(Au=f\). Then \(A\) is self-adjoint with eigenvalues accumulating only at \(+\infty\). Let \(N(t)\) be the number of eigenvalues of \(A\) not exceeding \(t\). For fixed \(x\), let \(\mu_ A(x)\) be \((2\pi)^{-n}\) times the volume of the region in \(\mathbb{R}^ n\), where \(\sum_{|\alpha|,|\beta|=m} a_{\alpha\beta}(x) \xi^{\alpha+\beta}< 1\), and \(\mu_ A(\Omega)=\int_ \Omega\mu_ A(x)dx\). For \(\tau=k+\sigma>0\), with integer \(k\) and \(0<\sigma\leq 1\), suppose the \(a_{\alpha\beta}\), \(|\alpha|=|\beta|=m\), are in the class of functions \(u\) such that \(D^ \alpha u\) is bounded and continuous for \(|\alpha|\leq k\) and \(| D^ \alpha u(x)- D^ \alpha u(y)|/| x-y|^ \sigma\), \(x,y\in\Omega\) is bounded for \(|\alpha|=k\). If \(\partial\Omega\) is \(C^{2m}\), the main theorem is: \(N(t)-\mu_ A(\Omega)t^{n/2m}+O(t^{(n- \tau/(\tau+1))/2m}).\) The author states that this is a new result for \(2m\leq n\), \(1<\tau<m\). The proof is along similar lines to those of the above earlier paper.
