Let \((L_ n)\) be a sequence of trigonometric interpolation operators for an arbitrary system of nodes. The characteristic \(D(a)\), \(a\geq 0\), of the sequence \((L_ n)\) is defined as the supremum of all \(b\) such that \(\| L_ nf-f\|=O(n^{-b})\) for all \(f\in\text{Lip} a\) and \(- \infty\) if no such \(b\) exists. Equidistant nodes have \(D(a)\equiv a\). The author proves some general properties (e.g. concavity) of the characteristic. The Lagrange interpolation is also discussed.
