Let \(G\) be a locally compact group, its (generalized Fourier) algebra \(A_ p(G)\) and the Herz-Schur multiplier algebra \(B_ p(G)\), for \(1<p<\infty\). Relying on contributions due to Herz, Cowling, Haagerup, the author shows that \(B_ 2(G)\) is contractively included in \(B_ p(G)\). In particular, for the free group \(F_ r\) with \(r\) \((\geq 2)\) generators, which is nonamenable, \(A_ p(F_ r)\) admits an approximate identity \((u_ n)\) such that \(\sup_ n\| u_ n\|_{B_ p}\leq 1\). On the other hand, it is well known that \(G\) is amenable if and only if \(A_ p(G)\) admits a bounded approximate identity. This property leads the author to further characterizations of amenability, that are extensions of results due to Nebbia in terms of multiplier algebras.
