Interaction of nonlinear elastic material response with asymmetry of the cross-section leads to transcritical bifurcations which makes the rod sensitive to imperfections. Consequently, tapering a column as to optimize the shape against buckling may result in practical buckling loads below those of columns with uniform cross-section.
