The author discusses the use of regularization in finite-dimensional linear models. Tikhonov regularization and techniques based on the singular value decomposition are highlighted. Although the problems being studied can be simply stated in the language of numerical linear algebra (they are essentially over- and underdetermined systems of linear equations) the author uses language from other fields such as structural analysis and system analysis.
