    The uniform convergence \(\lim_{n\to\infty}{| p_ n(x)|^ p\over \sum^{n-1}_{k=0}| p_ k(x)|^ p}=0\), for \(x\in[b- a,b+a]\) and \(0<p<\infty\) is considered for solutions of a three-term recurrence relation \(xp_ n(x)=a_{n+1} p_{n+1}(x)+b_ n p_ n(x)+a_ n p_{n-1}(x)\), with the property that \(a_ n(\neq 0),b_ n\in\mathbb{C}\) with \(a_ n\to a/2\) and \(b_ n\to b\). Almost all initial conditions \(p_{-1}\) and \(p_ 0\) are allowed. The special case \(p_{- 1}=0\), \(p_ 0=1\) gives orthogonal polynomials whenever \(a_ n>0\) and \(b\in\mathbb{R}\). This paper thus treats three generalizations of an important result in the theory of orthogonal polynomials: the relative growth is considered for every \(p\in(0,\infty)\) and not only \(p=2\); complex coefficients \(a_ n\neq 0\) and \(b_ n\) are allowed and a great variety of initial conditions \(p_{-1}\), \(p_ 0\) lead to the same uniform convergence.
