The authors start from the following question: Given a group homomorphism \(\gamma: K_ 0(C(\mathbb{T}^ 2))\to K_ 0(A)\) for \(A\) a unital \(AF\) algebra, what conditions imply the existence of a unital \(*\)-homomorphism \(\varphi: C(\mathbb{T}^ 2)\to A\) such that \(\gamma=\varphi_ *\)? This happens precisely when \(\gamma\) preserves the order unit and maps the reduced \(K\)-theory of the torus into the kernel of \(\tau_ *\) for all bounded traces \(\tau: A\to\mathbb{C}\). The \(AF\) algebra \(A\) is assumed to be without finite-dimensional quotients. A Pimsner-Berg technique is used repeatedly as one of the main tools.
