There is an overview of the varieties of symbolic computing, focusing on those areas of symbolic computing that apply to simulation codes for systems of partial differential equations. Then the complementary codes ALPAL (A Livermore Physics Application Language, Cook, 1990) and PANACEA (Brown, 1989) are reviewed as the tool for the development of large-scale simulation codes; here the symbolic and numeric approaches are linked. An orientation and symbolic computation capabilities of these codes are discussed as well as their extensions and improvements.
