In recent works of \textit{R. Longo} [see e.g. Commun. Math. Phys. 130, No. 2, 285-309 (1990; Zbl 0705.46038)] the connection between the statistical dimension introduced by \textit{S. Doplicher}, \textit{R. Haag} and \textit{J. E. Roberts} [Commun. Math. Phys. 23, 199-230 (1971)] and the Jones index [ \textit{V. F. R. Jones}, Invent. Math. 72, 1-25 (1983; Zbl 0508.46040)] has been described clearly. A new definition of the index of subfactors of infinite factors has been given also. This definition and the properties of \textit{R. Longo}'s index are the basic tools of the author. First the author calculates the fusion rules of sectors associated with Coxeter graphs \(A_ n\) and \(D_ n\), one of his main results is the proof of a conjecture by \textit{A. Ocneanu} [Lond. Math. Soc. Lect. Note Ser., 136, 119-172 (1988; Zbl 0696.46048)], namely: If \(N \subset M\) is a pair of properly infinite factors with \(M\simeq N\) and index \([M:N] < \infty\), then the principal graph of \(M \supset N\) is neither \(E_ 7\) nor \(D_{odd}\). The other main result of the author is a complete classification of subfactors of type III\(_ 1\) approximately finite dimensional factors: If \(M\) is a type III\(_ 1\) approximately finite dimensional (AFD) factor and \(N\) is a subfactor of \(M\) with index \([M:N] =3\), then there exists a pair of type II\(_ 1\) AFD factors \(R \supset P\) such that \(R \otimes M_ 0 \supset P \otimes M_ 0\) is isomorphic to \(M \supset N\), where \(M_ 0\) is a type III\(_ 1\) AFD factor. The author's results imply that the classification of subfactors of the type III\(_ 1\) AFD factor with index 3 is exactly the same as the classification for the type II\(_ 1\) AFD factors: If the principal graph is \(D_ 4\) then \(N\) ist the fixed point algebra of \(M\) under the outer action of the group \(\mathbb{Z}_ 3\) and, if the principal graph is \(A_ 5\) then there exists a subfactor \(L \subset N\) and an outer action of \(S_{3}\) on \(L\) such that \(M = L \rtimes S_ 3 \;\supset \;L \rtimes S_ 2\). Finally the author gives a characterization of fixed point subalgebras of infinite factors under outer actions of finite groups.
