    Several authors have considered the problem of controlled approximation using continuous functions of compact support [see, e.g. \textit{C. de Boor} and \textit{R.-Q. Jia}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 95, 547-553 (1985; Zbl 0592.41027)]. Roughly speaking, a function \(\varphi\in C(R^ n)\) having compact support provides controlled approximation of order \(k\) if, for each \(f\) in the Sobolev space \(W_ 2^ k(R^ n)\), there exist functions \(c_ h: Z^ n\to R\) such that \(\| f-S_{1\over h}(\varphi * c_ h)h^{-{n\over 2}}\|_{s,2} \leq A_ s h^{k-s}| f|_{k,2}\) (\(0\leq s\leq k-1\)), such that the functions \((c_ h)\) have some ``control'' imposed (e.g. control on the support of \(c_ h\) or on its \(\ell_ 2\)-norm). Here, \(S_ \lambda g(x)\equiv g(\lambda x)\). In this manuscript, the authors replace the assumption of compact support on \(\varphi\) by an assumption on its decay at \(\infty\), obtaining an approximation result, not necessarily with control. For a multi-index \(\alpha\), let \(V_ \alpha: R^ n\to R\) be defined by \(V_ \alpha(x)=x^ \alpha/\alpha\)! Fix \(k,n\in N\) and \(\lambda\in(0,1)\), and let \(E\) denote the subspace of \(C(R^ n)\) consisting of those functions \(f\) for which \(\sup_{x\in R^ n}\{| f(x)|(1+\| x\|)^{n+k+\lambda}\}<\infty\). Let \(\Psi\) be a subspace of \(E\). The main result of this paper is that five properties are equivalent for \(\Psi\). As an example, we cite two of these properties: (i) There exist \(\psi_ \alpha\in\Psi\) and functions \(b_ \alpha\) in \(E\), \(\alpha<k\) such that the function \(\varphi=\sum_{|\alpha|<k}\psi_ \alpha * b_ \alpha\) is in \(E\) and satisfies the inequality \(\| f- S_{1/h}(\varphi * S_ h f)\|\leq Ch^ k| f|_{k,\infty}\) for all \(f\in W_ \infty^ k(R^ n)\). (ii) There exist \(\psi_ \alpha\in\Psi\) and finitely supported functions \(c_ \alpha: Z^ n\to R\) such that the function \(\psi=\sum_{\alpha<k}\psi_ \alpha * c_ \alpha\) is such that \(V_ \alpha-\psi *V_ \alpha\) is a polynomial of total degree at most \(| \alpha|-1\).
