The author makes a clear and persuasive case that Poincaré challenged primarily the thesis that mathematical rigor is logical rigor. According to Poincaré, as the author reads him: Even if we grant that there are specifically mathematical premisses, any rigorous and significant mathematical proof requires specifically mathematical rules of inference irreducible to the topic neutral rules of general logic. If Poincaré is correct, philosophy of mathematics cannot focus solely on the epistemology and metaphysical presuppositions of mathematical propositions.
