This monograph presents a fundamental treatment of the geometric theory for infinite dimensional systems that have the representation \(\dot x(t)=Ax(t)+Bu(t)+Eq(t)\), \(x(0)=x_ 0\), \(y(t)=Cx(t)\), \(Z(t)=Dx(t)\), \(t>0\), where x(.), u(.), q(.), y(.) and z(.) are time trajectories in respectively X; \(R^ m\), Q, Y and Z are general Banach spaces; B, C, D and E are bounded linear operators and finally A is a generator of a \(C_ 0\)-semigroup \(T_ A(t).\) The work consists of six chapters and one appendix. The first chapter contains results on the relation between invariant subspaces of the operator A and of its semigroup \(T_ A(t)\). In chapter II the relation between the various invariance concepts is investigated and it is proved that for closed subspaces, open and closed loop invariance are equivalent. In chapter III the concept of frequency invariance is used to investigate the solvability of the disturbance decoupling problem (DDP) in the case \(C=I\). The relation between the zeros of a single input system and its system invariant subspaces is used in chapter IV to give a complete characterization of all controlled invariant subspaces contained in the kernel of D. In chapter V the (DDP) with measurement feedback (i.e. \(C\neq I)\) is investigated. Chapter VI is analogous, but also considering stability. In the appendix the author presents counterexamples to certain properties that hold in the finite dimensional case, but not longer in the infinite dimensional case.
