The primary subject of this book is the long-term operation of hydroelectric power systems. The book consists of eight chapters. - Chapter 1 reviews the historical developments in the field, discussing briefly most of the related modelling and optimization techniques. - Chapter 2 is devoted to mathematical concepts and tools (matrix algebra, discrete variational calculus, the maximum principle, dynamic programming and functional analysis) needed in subsequent parts of the book. - Chapter 3 deals with the problem of sequentially connected multireservoir power systems. - Chapter 4 treats the general case of multichain (parallely and sequentially connected) hydropower systems. - Multireservoir systems operation under critical (low-flow) conditions is investigated in Chapter 5. - Chapter 6 is concerned with the operation of a hydrosystem for maximal energy capacity during the critical period with a fixed load of the system. - In Chapter 7 the optimal long-term operation of electric utility power systems combining hydro and thermal power plants is investigated. - Finally, Chapter 8 summarizes the results obtained and offers suggestions for future scientific research and applications. Each chapter is supplemented with an extensive reference list and, when appropriate, with additional comments. The book contains also an index of the technical terminology. This volume is intended as the foundation for a graduate course that treats in sufficient details the related aspects of electrical engineering, operations research, water resources research and applied mathematics. It can also be recommended for operating personel, consulting firms and government agencies interested in the subset of electric power systems.
