Mumford-Takemoto stability is defined in terms of subsheaves. This paper gives a new variant -- strong stability -- in terms of conditions on arbitrary sections of exterior powers. Strong stability implies stability and in characteristic zero they are the same. This is used to show that, in characteristic zero, finite pull-back preserves stability. The proofs proceed via the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau theorem relating stability to Kähler-Einstein metrics.
