Let \(X\) be a Banach space and \(B_ 1(X)\) the unit ball of \(X\). A point \(x\) of \(B_ 1(X)\) is called an exposed point if there exists \(f\in X^*\) such that \(\| f\|= f(x)= 1\) and \(f(y)< 1\) for all \(y\neq x\) in \(B_ 1(X)\). It is called smooth if there exists a unique \(f\in X^*\) such that \(\| f\|= f(x)= 1\). The authors study the exposed and smooth points of \(B_ 1(L(\ell^ p))\) and \(B_ 1(K(\ell^ p))\), where \(L(\ell^ p)\) is the space of bounded linear operators on \(\ell^ p\), \(1\leq p< \infty\), and \(K(\ell^ p)\) is the class of compact operators in \(L(\ell^ p)\). They characterize smooth points and exposed points of \(B_ 1(L(\ell^ p))\) and \(B_ 1(K(\ell^ p))\) for \(1\leq p<\infty\). Further, if \(1< p\neq 2< \infty\) they show that not every extreme point of \(B_ 1(L(\ell^ p))\) is exposed. They also characterize the exposed points of \(B_ 1(L(\ell^ 1,\ell^ p))\), \(1\leq p< \infty\).
