Restrictions of some unitary representations of \(SU(n, 1)\) to \(U(n-1, 1)\) (Q1188098)

It is well known that to each nonsingular character \(e^ \lambda\) of the maximal compact torus \(T\) of the group \(SU(2,1)\) there corresponds an irreducible square integrable representation \(V_ \lambda\) of \(SU(2,1)\). It is proved that the restriction of the representation \(V_ \lambda\) onto the subgroup \(U(1,1)\) decomposes into a continuous direct sum of unitary irreducible representations of the principal series of this subgroup. The corresponding Plancherel measure is calculated. It is also proved that if \(R\) is a representation of a nondegenerate limit of the discrete series of \(SU(n,1)\), then the restriction of \(R\) onto the subgroup \(U(n-1,1)\) is a sum of irreducible representations of discrete series and a continuous sum of representations of unitary principal series of this subgroup.
