The author adopts the point of view that a quantum group is a pair of Hopf algebras \(A_ q\) and \(U_ q\) with a Hopf pairing between them. Over a field, this means maps \(\chi: U\to A^ o\) and \(\psi: A\to U^ o\) which are mutually adjoint. For \(G=GL(n)\), he discusses \(GL_ q(n)\) from this point of view, where \(A\) is the algebra of functions on \(G\), and \(U\) is the hyperalgebra of \(G\) (at characteristic zero, \(U\) is the universal enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra of \(G\)). He also discusses \(SL_ q(n)\) in this way. In both cases, he shows how \(\psi\) is injective, i.e., \(GL_ q(n)\) and \(SL_ q(n)\) are connected. He also discusses a \(q\)- analogue of the Frobenius map when \(q\) is a root of unity. Let \(s\) be the order of \(q^ 2\), and \(t=q^ s\). Then if \(s\) is odd, the Frobenius is a homomorphism of \(GL_ q(n)\) to \(GL_ t(n)\). It commutes with the quantum determinant, and induces a Frobenius from \(SL_ q(n)\) to \(SL_ t(n)\). Finally, the author constructs some finite quantum subgroups of \(GL_ q(n)\) and \(SL_ q(n)\) which are slightly larger than the kernel of the Frobenius, and he discusses the simplicity of these finite groups.
