    Let \(\nu=\{\nu_ 1,\dots,\nu_ m\}\) and \(\mu=\{\mu_ 1,\dots,\mu_ m\}\) be partitions with \(\nu_ i\geq\mu_ i\geq 0\) for \(i=1,\dots,m\). Define \(H(\nu,\mu)=(h_{(\nu_ i-i)-(\mu_ j-j)})\) for \(i,j=1,\dots,n\), where \(h_ k=h_ k(x_ 1,x_ 2,\dots)\) denotes the \(k\)th homogeneous symmetric function, i.e. the sum of all monomials of degree \(k\) in the variables \(x_ i\). The author proves a conjecture on characters of \(S_ n\) which implies another conjecture both due to \textit{I. Goulden} and \textit{D. Jackson} (Immanants of combinatorial matrices (1989)] that all immanants of the Jacobi-Trudi matrix \(H(\nu,\mu)\) have nonnegative coefficients.
