Let \(G\ltimes N\) be the semi-direct product of two Lie groups \(G\) and \(N\) (\(N\) connected). Let \(\lambda: N\to\mathbb{C}^*\) be a continuous homomorphism, \(G_\lambda\) its stabiliser in \(G\). Let finally \(\mu\) be a unitary irreducible representation of \(G_\lambda\) on a Hilbert space \(E_\mu\). The author studies a certain Fréchet space of functions \(\varphi: G\to E_\mu\) such that \(\varphi(g_\lambda g)= \mu(g_\lambda) [\varphi(g)]\) for \(g_\lambda\in G_\lambda\) and \(g\in G\), and the (topological) irreducibility of the representation \(I^{\lambda,\mu}\) of \(G\ltimes N\) on that space given by \[ [I^{\lambda,\mu}(g,n)\varphi](x):= \lambda((xg)n(xg)^{-1} \varphi(xg) \quad \text{for } (g,n)\in G\ltimes N \text{ and } x\in G. \] This extends work of \textit{E. Thieleker} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 164, 353--369 (1972; Zbl 0211.34903)] and by \textit{F. L. Williams} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 233, 69--84 (1977; Zbl 0408.22012)] who studied the case of a compact \(G\). He shows that \(I^{\lambda,\mu}\) is irreducible if the Poisson transform is injective and that this condition in some cases is necessary. Furthermore he constructs a number of examples in which \(I^{\lambda,\mu}\) is not irreducible. He is in particular interested in the Cartan motion group for a pseudo-Riemannian rank one symmetric space. The representations and variants of them have also been studied by \textit{C. Champetier} and \textit{P. Delorme} [J. Funct. Anal. 43, 258--279 (1981; Zbl 0498.22012)] and by the reviewer [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 324, 543--554 (1991; Zbl 0759.22016)].
