The material in this monograph is divided into two parts: the first part is concerned with spectral decomposition theory; the second part is concerned with applications of structural theory. Specifically, Chapter V deals with pole assignment of MIMO control systems and Chapter VI deals with decomposition of MIMO systems. Illustrative numerical examples are presented throughout the book. In Chapter I, after introducing some definitions and properties of \(\lambda\)-matrices, the organization of Chapters is reviewed. In Chapter II, a numerical method to find canonical RMFDs and LMFDs for reachable and observable systems, respectively, is illustrated. The method is elegant, but does not present anything more than \textit{W. A. Wolovich}'s ``Linear multivariable systems'' (1974; Zbl 0291.93002). In Chapter III, latent roots and latent structures of a general nonsingular \(\lambda\)-matrix are studied. The relationships between the latent structures of nonsingular \(\lambda\)-matrices and eigenstructures of the system maps in their associated state-space minimal realization are investigated. The material in this chapter has not been so familiar. In the first part of Chapter IV, a structure theorem for canonical left (right) divisors and complete sets of canonical left (right) divisors are presented. \textit{W. M. Wonham}'s [Linear multivariable control: a geometric approach 2nd ed. (1979; Zbl 0424.93001)] geometric approaches are employed. In the second part, the spectral factorization of a nonsingular \(\lambda\)-matrix is presented. In the final part, computational aspects are given. The material in this chapter is the principal part of the book. The theory developed here is effectively employed in Chapter VI. Chapter V concerns with the control of MIMO systems. Design philosophy is based on pole assignment. Two methods are introduced: the first is to use closed loop right characteristic \(\lambda\)-matrices; the second is to use a nonsingular column-reduced \(\lambda\)-matrix. Both methods lead to the same closed-loop transfer matrix, but the numerators are different. This seems to deal with the freedom in the choice of a feedback gain matrix F for the same set of assigned poles, but the criterion for the choice of a noncanonical column-reduced \(\lambda\)-matrix is not clear. In Chapter VI, both parallel and cascade decompositions of MIMO systems are introduced as the applications of spectral factorization. The result is applied to the model reduction of MIMO systems. The material of the monograph is more detailed and intricated than Wolovich's ``Linear multivariable systems'' (loc. cit.), but does not seem to have presented much better design methods for MIMO control systems.
