[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.] This volume consists of 14 papers and various aspects in FMSs are described - scheduling, robotics (including AGV control), hierarchical structure, CIM, economic consideration, etc. Probabilistic, stochastic, and statistical aspects are also discussed in relation to the modelling and simulation of an FMS. One of the major issues is the performance of an FMS, and so optimality considerations are given with respect to various aspects and from various view points. Methodologies employed are mathematical programming including dynamic programming, Markov chain, queueing theory, Petri net, etc. The first quarter of this volume is devoted to an overview focussing on the issue of dispatching with failure-prone machines. A list of 140 recent papers is also given with their classification.
