[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.] This monograph presents the lecture notes of an international course held in International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM) in Udine, Italy. It provides a comprehensive and unified treatment of shape and layout optimization of structural systems and related topics. The lecture notes are divided into twenty-three chapters dealing with current research questions and issues on optimization. The first five chapters 1-5 review continuum-based optimality criteria, both at an analytical level and at a computational level using iterative procedures. The next five chapters 6- 10 deal with various aspects of layout optimization. In chapters 11 and 12, important aspects of topology optimization are covered. Shape optimization is treated extensively in chapters 13-15, 17 and 20-22, and certain applications of artificial neural nets in structural optimization are given in chapter 16. The topics on structural reanalysis and some theorems of structural variation are discussed in chapters 18 and 19. Lastly, a brief review of domain composition is reported in chapter 23. This self-contained monograph provides an exciting view of an expanding field of research, it is highly recommended to everyone interested in structural optimization, and it will be useful for courses on optimization given in naval architecture, mechanical and aeronautical engineering departments.
