[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.] This book are the proceedings of a workshop with the same title organized by S. N. Chow, M. Golubitsky, R. McGehee, G. Sell and D. Yuen in the 1990 Institute of Mathematics and its Applications of the University of Minnesota program on ``Dynamical Systems and their Applications'' and contains the 14 invited lectures. It gives an excellent overview on the application of modern dynamical system and chaos theory to nonlinear phenomena related to geophysical processes including some nice color photographs. In the selection of the articles special focus has been given to three areas: convection in the Earth's mantle, geodynamic processes and dynamics associated with volcanic phenomena. Since many of the problems treated are far from being completely solved, the book, besides giving an introduction into the subject, also serves as a fertile ground of future research for the reader.
