In the first of two essential sections of the paper under review the generalization of some previous author's results are presented. All they concerned mainly the spectral order \(f\prec g\) as well as operators which preserve this order. [Remind: one writes \(f\prec g\) for two integrable functions \(f\) and \(g\) defined on the measure spaces \((X,\mu)\) and \((X',\mu')\), respectively, whenever \(\mu(X)=\mu'(X'):=a\), and \(\int^ t_ 0 f^*(s)ds\leq\int^ t_ 0 g^*(s)ds\) \((0\leq t\leq a)\), \(\int^ a_ 0 f(s)ds=\int^ a_ 0 g(s)ds\), where \(f^*\) and \(g^*\) denote the non-increasing functions on [0,a] equimeasurable with \(f\) and \(g\), respectively.] In the last section the following improvement of the well- known Hardy-Littlewood-Pólya theorem is given. Theorem 3.6. If \(f\in L^ 1(X,\mu)\) and \(g\in L^ 1(X',\mu')\), where \(\mu(X)=\mu'(X')=a<\infty\), then \(f\prec g\) if and only if \(\int_ X\phi(f)d\mu\leq\int_{X'}\phi(g)d\mu'\) for all convex functions \(\phi: R^ 1\to R^ 1\). If \(f\prec g\) and if \(\phi\) is strictly convex such that \(\phi(f)\in L^ 1(X,\mu)\) then \(\int_ X \phi(f)d\mu=\int_{X'}\phi(g)d\mu'\) if and only if \(f\) and \(g\) are equimeasurable.
