It is proved that there is a concave unimodal polynomial map \(p: I\to I\) of the interval \(I=[0,1]\) which is symmetric with respect to 1/2 and for which there are factors \(0\leq \mu_ 0 < \mu_ 1 < \mu_ 2\leq 1\) such that the kneading sequences of the maps \(\mu_ ip\) satisfy \(RLR^ 3C=K(\mu_ 0p)\neq K(\mu_ 1p)\neq K(\mu_ 2p)=RLR^ 3C\). This disproves a conjecture of \textit{W. A. Beyer}, \textit{R. D. Mauldin}, and \textit{P. R. Stein} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 115, 305-362 (1986; Zbl 0657.58019)]. The mapping \(p\) is obtained by first showing that certain piecewise linear mappings \(f: I\to I\) with properties specified by \textit{A. Zdunik} [Fundam. Math. 124, 235-241 (1984; Zbl 0562.54028)] do exist and then smoothening \(f\).
