This paper is concerned with some properties of the trigonometric series \[ g_ \alpha(\theta,\beta)=\sum^ \infty_{n=1}(n+\beta)^{- \alpha}\cos n\theta,\;h_ \alpha(\theta,\beta)=\sum^ \infty_{n=1}(n+\beta)^{-\alpha}\sin n\theta, \] where \(\theta\) is real, \(\alpha>0\) and \(\beta>-1\). These properties arise in the study of the stability and the rate of convergence of certain numerical methods for boundary integral equations on smooth curves in the plane. The special case \(\beta=0\) is treated and the extensions to certain classical orthogonal polynomials are indicated.
