    Assume that \(f(y)\) satisfies the conditions i) \(yf(y)>0\), \(y\neq 0\), ii) \(0<\int^ \varepsilon_ 0{dy\over f(y)}\), \(\int_{-\varepsilon}^ 0{dy\over f(y)}<\infty\), iii) \(f'(y)F(y)>{1\over c}\), \(c>0\), for all \(y\neq 0\), where \(F(y)=\int^ y_ 0{dv\over f(v)}\). The author proves that the equation \(y''+a(t)f(y)=0\) is oscillatory if \(a(t)\) satisfies some integral condition that allows negative values of \(a(t)\) for large \(t\). This generalizes an earlier result by \textit{M. K. Kwong} and the author [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 85, 547-551 (1982; Zbl 0503.34022)] for the Emden-Fowler equation where \(f(y)=y^ \gamma\), \(0<\gamma<1\).
