    The Cauchy problem for a linear partial differential equation with constant coefficients is considered: \[ \varepsilon P_ 1(D)u+P_ 2(D) u= f(x,\varepsilon), \quad x=(x_ 1,x'), \quad x_ 1\in[0,T], \quad x'\in\mathbb{R}^{n-1}; \] \[ D_ 1^{j-1} u(0,x')=\varphi_ j(x',\varepsilon), \qquad j=1,\dots,m. \] Here \(m\) is the order of \(P_ 1(D)\) with respect to \(D_ 1\), \(m'\) is that of \(P_ 2(D)\), and it is supposed \(m-m'=2\) or \(m-m'=1\). The reduced problem is \[ P_ 2(D)u= f(x,0), \quad x=(x_ 1,x'), \quad x_ 1\in[0,T], \quad x'\in\mathbb{R}^{n- 1}; \] \[ D_ 1^{j-1} u(0,x')=\varphi_ j(x',0), \qquad j=1,\dots,m'. \] The convergence \(u(x,\varepsilon)\to u(x,0)\) as \(\varepsilon\to 0\) was investigated by Nagumo under the assumption that the ``higher'' initial data are matched with the solution of the reduced problem \(\varphi_ j(x',\varepsilon)\to D_ 1^{j-1} u(0,x')\) as \(\varepsilon\to 0\), \(j=m'+1,\dots,m\). This paper deals with the same problem without the matching conditions. The explicit expression of the fundamental solution of the ordinary differential equation \[ [\varepsilon P_ 1(D_ 1,\xi')+ P_ 2(D_ 1,\xi')] Y(x_ 1,\xi',\varepsilon)=0, \qquad \xi'\in\mathbb{R}^{n-1}, \] is applied to solve the problem.
