This paper deals with some aspects of quasi-conformal deformation theory for Kleinian groups and proves the following main result: For any non- elementary Kleinian group \(G\) having the property that every geodesic in the domain of discontinuity \(D\) has Poincaré length at least \(A\), for a given \(A\), there exists an \(R\) such that \(\ell_ N(c^*)\leq R\ell_ S(c)\). Here \(c\) is any closed curve in \(D/G\), \(\ell_ S(c)\) is the Poincaré metric length of \(c\) in \(D/G\) and \(\ell_ N(c^*)\) equals either the length of the closed geodesic \(c^*\) in \(H^ 3/G\) homotopic to \(c\) or 0 in case there is no such geodesic. The implications of this statement treated in this paper include a conformal version of Thurston's compactness theorem and a slight generalization of the Bers slice theorem.
