The author considers a bounded strongly convex domain \(D\) in \(\mathbb{R}^ n\) and embeds it into the projective space \(\mathbb{R}\mathbb{P}^ n\) by means of the canonical embedding \(\mathbb{R}^ n\to \mathbb{R}\mathbb{P}^ n\). Then he studies the group \(\text{Aut}(D)\) of all projective transformations leaving \(D\) invariant. To do this he uses as main tool a projectively invariant distance namely the pseudodistance of Kobayashi [see \textit{S. Kobayashi}, Differential geometry, 14th Semest. S. Banach Int. Math. Cent., Warsaw 1979, Banach Cent. Publ. 12, 127-152 (1984; Zbl 0558.53019)]. The main result of the paper is the following fixed-point-free theorem : ``If \(H\) is a subgroup of \(\text{Aut}(D)\) which has a relatively compact orbit, then it has a fixed point''. Finally, several applications are derived, especially about the dimension of the full automorphism group in the smooth case.
