The author considers quasistationary motion of fluids with free surface. Inertia forces are neglected. Part 1 is devoted to the formulation of the boundary value problem. On the free surface the condition \(P\cdot n=p^ 0n+\nabla_ \Gamma\cdot (\sigma \nabla_{\Gamma}^ z)\) is imposed with \(P\) -- stress tensor, \(p^ 0\) -- the pressure in the neighbouring gas, \(\sigma\) -- the coefficient of surface stress, \(z\) -- the free surface. In the sequel, it is assumed that \(\sigma=\sigma(z,t)\) is given. In part 2 the original problem is reduced to the determination of a bianalytic complex stress-streamfunction \(w\). Further, a representation of the singular part of \(w\) is given. The boundary value problem for \(w\) is formulated. Under the assumption that the free surface and the part of the boundary with prescribed position are both nonempty, it is proven that the homogeneous problem allows only the trivial solution. In part 4 it is shown that the boundary value problem for \(w\) is equivalent to an integral equation on the boundary. The corresponding integral operator is studied in part 5 for the special case of the free surface condition holding on the whole boundary. To this end, a conformal mapping onto the unit disk is introduced. Finally, for a special case existence and uniqueness of a solution to the original problem are proven.
