Let \(G\) be a unimodular locally compact group. Suppose we are given an approximate identity \(\{\varphi_ s\}_{s>0}\) on \(G\) satisfying (i) \(\varphi_ t * \varphi_ s=\varphi_ s * \varphi_ t\), \(\forall s,t>0\) and (ii) \(\|\varphi_ s\|_{p'}\leq Cs^{-\gamma/p}\) for some \(\gamma>0\) and \(\forall p\), \(1\leq p\leq\infty\) (\(p'\) is the index conjugate to \(p\)). This approximate identity gives rise to the family of norms \(N_{p,q}^ \alpha (f)=(\sum_{n\in\mathbb{Z}} \| f*(\varphi_{2^{-n}}- \varphi_{2^{-n+1}})\|_ p^ q 2^{n\alpha q})^{1/q}\) (with the usual modification of the formula for \(q=\infty)\), and hence to the family of spaces \(\Lambda_{p,q}^ \alpha\), which can be considered as natural analogues of Lipschitz spaces. The main result reads as follows: If \(1/r=1/p-\alpha/\gamma>0\), \(1<p<\infty\), then \(\Lambda_{p,q}^ \alpha\) is continuously embedded in \(L_{r,q}(G)\). In general the space \(\Lambda_{p,q}^ \alpha\) does depend on the choice of the approximative identity. The authors give a sufficient condition for two approximative identities to generate the same Lipschitz scale.
