\textit{F. M. Dekking} has shown [Adv. Math. 44, 78--104 (1982; Zbl 0495.51017); J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A 32, 315--320 (1982; Zbl 0492.05019)] how to construct, from an endomorphism of a free group of rank 2, a fractal curve and associated tilings of the plane, if the endomorphism satisfies some technical conditions. The aim of the authors of the paper under review is to make Dekking's result more precise. They can compute in particular the Hausdorff (fractal) dimension of the curves they study, in some cases. Their work is too complicated to be sketched here, we shall only say that their main idea is to construct, from the given endomorphism, another endomorphism of the free group of rank 3, which is in some sense ``simpler'' than the given endomorphism of a free group of rank 2.
