    In this interesting and appealing paper the authors develop a functional calculus on Riesz spaces and \(f\)-algebras. Their major results read as follows. (i) Denote by \({\mathcal H}(\mathbb{R}^ n)\) the Riesz space of all real continuous positive homogeneous functions on \(\mathbb{R}^ n\). If \(E\) is an Archimedean, uniformly complete Riesz space, \(a_ 1,\dots,a_ n\in E\) and \[ {\mathcal F}(a_ 1,\dots,a_ n)=\{f\in {\mathcal H}(\mathbb{R}^ n):\;f(a_ 1,\dots,a_ n) \text{ exists in } E\}, \] then \({\mathcal F}(a_ 1,\dots,a_ n)= {\mathcal H}(\mathbb{R}^ n)\) and \(\Phi: {\mathcal H}(\mathbb{R}^ n)\to E\) defined by \(\Phi(f)= f(a_ 1,\dots,a_ n)\) is the unique Riesz homomorphism with \(\Phi(e_ j)=a_ j\) (where \(e_ j\) stands for the \(j\)th coordinate functional). (ii) If \(a_ 1,\dots,a_ n\in E\) with \(E\) an Archimedean, uniformly complete semiprime \(f\)-algebra, then \({\mathcal A}(a_ 1, \dots,a_ n)\) is defined by \[ \{f\in C(\mathbb{R}^ n):\;f(0)=0,\;f(a_ 1,\dots,a_ n) \text{ exists in }E\} \] and \({\mathcal A}(\mathbb{R}^ n)\) is the Archimedean, uniformly complete \(f\)-algebra of all real continuous functions on \(\mathbb{R}^ n\) of polynomial growth for which \[ \lim_{t\downarrow 0} t^{-1} f(tx) \] exists uniformly on bounded subsets of \(\mathbb{R}^ n\). The second major result is the following: \({\mathcal A}(\mathbb{R}^ n) \subset {\mathcal A}(a_ 1,\dots,a_ n)\) and \(\Phi\) is the unique multiplicative Riesz homomorphism with \(\Phi(e_ j)=a_ j\) \((j=1,\dots,n)\). This theorem generalizes an earlier result obtained by \textit{F. Beukers} and the reviewer [J. Austr. Math. Soc., Ser. A 37, 110-116 (1984; Zbl 0555.06014), Theorem 5]. Result (ii) can be extended to Archimedean, uniformly complete \(f\)- algebras which are not necessarily semiprime. It generalizes then both (i) and (ii).
