The authors define bounds for Zadeh's so-called S-type membership functions, so that any two S-type membership functions \(f_ 1\), \(f_ 2\) within the bounds have positive correlation. As correlation is used \[ c_{f_ 1,f_ 2}=1-{4\int(f_ 1-f_ 2)^ 2\over \int(2f_ 1- 1)^ 2+(2f_ 2-1)^ 2} \] introduced by the authors and \textit{D. Dutta Majumder} [Fuzzy Sets Syst. 17, 23-38 (1985; Zbl 0583.62047)] and justified by several heuristic arguments. An application of such bounds in the image segmentation problem is extensively discussed.
