Let \(G\) be a finite group and \(r\) a prime. An \(r\)-subgroup \(R\) of \(G\) is called a radical subgroup of \(G\) if \(R=O_ r(N(R))\). Let \(\phi\) be an irreducible character of \(N(R)\). The pair \((R,\phi)\) is called a weight of \(G\) if \(\phi\) is trivial on \(R\) and in an \(r\)-block of defect 0 of \(N(R)/R\). Furthermore, \((R,\phi)\) is a \(B\)-weight of \(G\), where \(B\) is an \(r\)-block of \(G\), if \(\phi\) is in an \(r\)-block \(b\) of \(N(R)\) such that \(B\) corresponds to \(b\) under the Brauer homomorphism. The Alperin conjecture states that the number of \(B\)-weights of \(G\), up to \(G\)- conjugacy, is equal to the number of modular irreducible representations of \(G\) in \(B\). The conjecture was proved by \textit{J. L. Alperin} and \textit{P. Fong} [J. Algebra 131, 2-22 (1990; Zbl 0714.20007)] if \(G\) is a symmetric group or if \(G\) is a general linear group and \(r\) is odd. In this paper the author proves the conjecture when \(G\) is a general linear group and \(r = 2\), by explicitly determining the radical subgroups and their normalizers in \(G\). He also uses the 2-block theory for general linear groups of odd characteristic, as given by \textit{M. Broué} [in Sémin. Bourbaki, Astérisque 133/134, 159-188 (1986; Zbl 0653.20041)].
