The idea of the paper is to find a couple \((y,x)\) such that \(F(y,x)=0\), where \(x\) is interpreted as measured variable and in consequence should be as close as possible to a nominal value \(\hat x\); i.e., \(x\) is computed as a solution of \(\min\{\| x-\hat x\|;\;F(y,x)=0\}\). If the solution \(y\) is not uniquely determined then the algorithm computes the one that minimizes \(\| y-\hat y\|\), where \(\hat y\) is another nominal value.
