An approximation scheme for computing the convolution of independent binomial variables is proposed. This scheme is based on an approximation method which is compared with the method of \textit{T. Speevak} and \textit{A. K. Yu} [Technometrics 29, 103-107 (1987; Zbl 0608.62129)]. The goal of the paper is to compare the properties of these two methods and to study their advantages and limitations. The knowledge of these advantages and limitations is exploited in developing the author's scheme. The author concludes that the two methods can be applied alternatively. A criterion for determining which of them is better for a problem is developed. The author's scheme is found to be devoid of most of the shortcomings associated with each of the two methods and is also more accurate.
