This paper is concerned with the global asymptotic stability of the rest state for general Euler-Lagrange systems. Here the Lagrangian is convex in the derivative of the state. The results (which generalize a number of earlier stability theorems for second order differential equations) are obtained by studying the behaviour of the Hamiltonian.
