Suppose that \({\mathcal C}\) is a dcc category and \(R\) is a ring with identity. The author proves a necessary and sufficient condition for \(\text{cd}_ R {\mathcal C} \leq 1\). The condition is phrased in terms of a requirement that \(n\)-crowns, which are a type of commutative diagram in which each path has length at most n, can be refined in a particular way to diagrams in which each path has length at most 3. The paper depends heavily on the work of \textit{R. W. Wong} [``Some projective free ringoids'', Ph. D. Thesis, Rutgers Univ., New Brunswick, NJ, 1977], and generalizes a previous result of the author and \textit{B. Mitchell} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 13, 125-137 (1978; Zbl 0417.18007)].
