The paper deals with the numerical solution of the unsteady two- dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. The analysis starts with the elimination of the pressure by means of integration. Different methods are presented as applications of the finite difference method and the method of splines. The methods result in time-dependent systems of ordinary differential equations which are solved with the Runge-Kutta scheme. No iterative procedure is required. Numerical results for the example of the driven cavity problem have been obtained on a PC. The numerical experiments show no significant difference between the proposed methods. The methods were easy in application and stable. The disadvantage lies in the rather big coefficient matrices so that the use of a supercomputer is recommended.
