In this paper, the author discusses the bifurcating branches of small solutions of \(-\Delta u=\lambda f(u)\) on a square with Dirichlet boundary conditions near a double eigenvalue when \(f(0)=0\), \(f'(0)=1\), \(f''(0)\neq 0\). [Reviewers remark: It seems that some of the results could be systematized, simplified and improved a little by putting the problem into the framework of the abstract theory of the reviewer [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 23, 699-734 (1971; Zbl 0227.47050)] or [PhD thesis, Cambridge University, 1972]. This comment also applies to some of his other work. Generally, theory, especially when combined with symmetry considerations, more quickly makes clear what are the possible asymptotics of solutions. In addition, if his system (3.12) or (3.19) has no real solutions with \(\beta=0\) but has at least 4 but a finite number of non-trivial solutions (possibly complex but not differing by roots of unity) then these solutions must automatically be non-degenerate in the sense of Lemma 2 (by complex degree theory as in the reviewer's article [Proc. London Math. Soc., III. Ser. 26, 359-384 (1973; Zbl 0252.47069)]). Note that there seem to be some solutions missed in the case on p. 404 when \(c_ 1=-c_ 2\).].
