Suppose that \(T=\{T_ n\}_{n-1}^ \infty\) is a sequence of noncommuting operators on a Hilbert space \(H\) such that the matrix \([T_ 1,T_ 2,\dots]\) is a contraction. The author establishes a one-to-one correspondence between the contractive intertwining dilations of \(T\) and generalized choice sequences \(\{\Gamma_ n\}_{n=1}^ \infty\) of contractions. Here \(\Gamma_ 1\) acts between two suitable spaces while, for \(n\geq 2\), \(\Gamma_ n\in B(D_{\Gamma_{n-1}}, D_{\Gamma_{n- 1}^*} \oplus D_{\Gamma_{n-1}^*} \oplus\dots)\) where \(D_ \Gamma= \overline {\text{D}_ \Gamma H}\) and \(\text{D}_ \Gamma=(1- \Gamma^*\Gamma)^{1\over 2}\). This is an extension of a result of \textit{Z. Ceauşescu} and \textit{C. Foiaş} [Acta Sci. Math. 40, 9-32 (1978; Zbl 0397.47004)]. It is shown that there exists also a labelling of contractive intertwining dilations of \(T\) by contractive multi-analytic operators. The uniqueness of contractive intertwining dilations is characterized in terms of regular factorizations.
