An elastic material is internally constrained at a point if the set of admissible deformation gradients at that point does not include all invertible tensors. After establishing the notation used, the structure of the constrained manifold is discussed, and the approach of Truesdell and Noll applied. The concepts of the symmetry, of the linearized stress responses, and of the admissible displacement gradients are then established. An example demonstrating the theory and involving torsion of an incompressible inextensible cylinder is given.
