This paper deals with the solution of a singular 2-D system with variable coefficients. It begins with the definitions of boundary values of the solution and the conditionality of the singular 2-D linear systems. It is then shown that the system will have a unique solution for any input sequence provided that the singular 2-D linear system is solvable and conditionable and the system can be completely characterized by its boundary mapping. An effective method for finding such a solution is illustrated by a numerical example. The results of this paper is based mainly on the extension of Luenberger's boundary mapping equation and the boundary recursion for 1-D systems to singular 2-D time-varying systems. Many papers on the related topics are mostly on discrete systems. So is this paper. It will be interesting if some comments can be made as to wether similar approaches and results can be applied to continuous models.
