The best asymptotic constant for the Bernstein operators \(B_ n\) is \(\gamma=\limsup_{n\to\infty}\gamma_ n\), where \[ \gamma_ n=\sup_ f \max_{0\leq x\leq 1} | B_ n(f,x)-f(x)|/\omega(f,n^{-1/2}) \] (the supremum is taken over all \(f\in C[0,1]\)). \textit{C. G. Esseen} [Numer. Math. 2, 206-213 (1960; Zbl 0104.282)] has shown that \(\gamma=1.045564\). The author studies the best asymptotic constant for a class of operators constructed by probabilistic methods. Bernstein, Szász, Baskakov, Gamma and Weierstrass operators are special cases of this class.
