The author considers equations of the following forms: \[ u_ t+N(u)+ iL(u) =0, \quad u_ t+L(u_ t)+N(u)=0, \] where subscripts stand for partial differentiation, \(i= \sqrt{-1}\), \(u=u(t,x)\), \(t>0\), \(x \in \mathbb{R}^ n\), is a real (or complex) valued function, \(N\) is a nonlinear functional of \(u\) and its complex conjugate \(u\) (complex case) and their derivatives and \(L\) is a linear ``pseudodifferential'' operator defined by its Fourier transform \(\widehat{L(u)} (\xi)=\omega(\xi)\hat u(\xi)\). Under the assumption that these equations are nonlocal dispersive the author shows the initial value problem is locally well-posed in Hadamard's sense in various weighted Sobolev spaces and obtains for \(C^ \infty\) dispersive relations, solutions in Schwartz space. In addition, the solutions depend continuously on the dispersion operator. As applications the author considers the intermediate long wave equation and discusses the continuity of its solution with respect to its parameters characterizing in physical situations the depth of the fluids, and their Korteweg-de Vries and Benjamin-Ono limits. Similar results are also derived for some generalizations of the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation. Several results in the field are quoted in the introduction.
