    Denote by \(L^ 2\) the space of \(\ell\)-periodic functions \(\varphi\) such that \(\varphi^ 0:=\sum_ j|\varphi(\cdot-j)|\in L^ 2([0,1]^ s)\) (all the sums in this review will be taken over \(Z^ s)\). It follows that \(L^ 2\) is a subspace of \(L^ 2(\mathbb{R}^ s)\) containing the functions with fast exponential decay and, in particular, the compactly supportd functions in \(L^ 2(\mathbb{R}^ s)\). A function \(\varphi\) is called refinable if \(\varphi(\cdot/2)/2^ s=\varphi*' a_ \varphi:=\sum_ j\varphi(\cdot-j)a_ \varphi(j)\), for some \(a_ \varphi\ell^ 2(Z^ s)\), and \(\ell\)-stable if \(\|\varphi *' a\|_ 2\geq\text{const.}\| a\|_ 2\), for all \(a\in\ell^ 2(Z^ s)\). Putting \(V_ 0:=\varphi *'(Z^ s)\) and \(V_ k:=\sigma_ k V_ 0\), where \(\sigma_ k f\mapsto f(2^ k)\), then \textit{R. Q. Jia} and \textit{C. A. Micchelli} [Proc. R. Soc. Edinb., Sect. A (to appear)] proved that if is refinable and \(\ell^ 2\)-stable then \(\{V_ k: k\in Z\}\) is a multiresolution approximation in \(L^ 2(\mathbb{R}^ s)\), i.e. (i) \(V_ k\subset V_{k+1}\); (ii) \(\bigcup_ k V_ k\) is dense in \(L^ 2(\mathbb{R}^ s)\) and \(\bigcap_ k V_ k=\{0\}\); (iii) \(f\in V_ k\Leftrightarrow f(2\cdot)\in V_{k+1}\); (iv) \(f\in V_ k\Rightarrow f(\cdot-2^{-k}\cdot j)\in V_ k\), \(\forall k\in Z\), \(\forall j\in Z^ s\); and (v) \(V_ 0\) has an unconditional basis. A prewavelet is a function \(\psi\) in the orthogonal complement of \(V_ 0\) in \(V_{-1}\). It follows that \(\psi(2^{k_ 1}\cdot-j_ 1)\perp\psi(2^{k_ 2}\cdot-j_ 2)\), for all \(k_ 1\neq k_ 2\), and \(\psi\) is called a wavelet if the above relation holds whenever \(k_ 1\neq k_ 2\) or \(j_ 1\neq j_ 2\). The aim of this paper is to construct compactly supported prewavelets in \(L^ 2(\mathbb{R}^ s)\), for \(s=1,2,3\), based on complex- valued skew-symmetric function \(\varphi\). A similar construction, but using box-splines, was given by the authors [Approximation theory and functional analysis. In honor of George G. Lorentz on the occasion of his 80th birthday, Sev. Pap. Conf., Austin/TX (USA) 1990, 133-149 (1991; Zbl 0719.41018)].
