This paper is concerned with a generalization of investigations of A. Fujii concerning the ``zeta-function'' \(\sum \sin(\alpha r_ j)r_ j^{-s}\) where the \(r_ j\) are associated with the eigenvalues \(\lambda_ j>1/4\) of the Laplace-Betrami operator for a cofinite Fuchsian group. The major generalization undertaken here is to the case where \(PSL_ 2(\mathbb{R})\) is replaced be a semisimple Lie group of rank 1. The authors also generalize the zeta-function by adding an extra parameter; in the case of Fuchsian groups their zeta function would be \(\sum \sin(\alpha r_ j)(b^ 2+r_ j^ 2)^{-s/2}\). They develop the Selberg trace formula in their framework to the point where they can determine the analytic properties of these zeta-functions and in particular show that when \(\alpha>0\) they are entire functions.
