Let \(G\) be a semisimple Lie group with finite center, \(K\) a maximal compact subgroup, \(\theta\) the corresponding Cartan involution and \(P=\text{MAN}\) a minimal parabolic subgroup of \(G\). When \(G=SL(3,\mathbb{R})\) or \(SL(4,\mathbb{R})\), the authors give an explicit formula for the determinant of Harish-Chandra's \(C\)-function. This function, related to intertwining operators between principal series representations of \(G\) induced from the subgroups \(P\) and \(\theta P\), depends on \(\nu\) (a character of \(A)\), on \(\gamma\in\widehat K\) and on \(\sigma\in\widehat M\) (irreducible unitary representations of \(K\) and \(M\) respectively). For \(SL(3,\mathbb{R})\) and \(SL(4,\mathbb{R})\) the above determinant, entirely explicit up to a constant factor, is given by a (lengthy) product of factors \(a_ i/b_ i\), where each \(a_ i\), \(b_ i\) is a Gamma function of the parameters corresponding to \(\nu\), \(\gamma\) and \(\sigma\). Thus all zeros and poles of the determinant can be read off easily.
